I think most teenagers feel like they’re being punished for being themselves at some point or another. “Doin’ Time for Bein’ Young” by James Intveld: From the Cry-Baby soundtrack (a great movie about teen rebellion). The nature of the conflict is intentionally vague (which makes it timeless).ĥ. “For What It’s Worth” by Buffalo Springfield: More than anything, this song is a call to reflection, attention, and thought. “Rebel Girl” by Bikini Kill: The best thing about this song is that the rebel girl isn’t the outcast or the weirdo, she’s the “queen of the neighborhood”! ![]() ![]() The Pilgrims were by then discovering the disadvantages of life in Holland, where war threatened. Starting with a description of the land the Pilgrims would encounter, then conditions in Europe and especially Plymouth, England, just before 1620, and the Mayflower voyage, the author then steps back to describe the religious, economic and social problems faced by men and women who rejected the established church and its rules. ![]() The scope of the research can be judged by thirty-four closely printed pages of references. Bunker constructs a detailed, wide-ranging account, not just of the voyage and settlement, which takes up a relatively small proportion of the whole, but of the circumstances which drove the Pilgrims to Holland, then New England. Why did the Pilgrims set sail in the Mayflower, and what has been their influence on both American and English history? This copiously researched book delves into hitherto ignored archives as well as consulting archaeology, linguistics and landscape. ![]() ![]() Like a mother with her children, I don’t pick favorites but I totally do so Out of Light is the best choice to share a birthday with.Īnyway, that’s the entire update. The pages are filled with Copeland and young African-American dancers who fly across the pages. Myers art is a lush mix of media that is just as radiant as the verse. She weaves lovely metaphors throughout her words, “stitching worn-out slippers, swift as applause” is one of my favorites and it is just as vivid and unique as Copeland herself. ![]() It is shining verse that lifts the reader up and invites them to leap across the page along with Copeland. It is hard to believe that poetry with this much control and beauty comes from someone who has not written many books. This is a beautiful book of inspiration that reaches far beyond dance.Ĭopeland’s verse is exceptional. Copeland tells it all in poetry that soars and dances just as she does. It is for anyone who needs to hear a voice of success speak about how important dedication and hard work is to creating that success. Lest you think this is a book just for dancers, it is not. Here she writes her debut picture book and through it encourages other young dancers of color. Wow!
